A friend and fellow glass artist sets aside a couple of months each year to experiment with new ideas and explore possibilities. He says it renews his love of making glass art. He also warns me that successful and beautiful results come slowly…very slowly.
I had been giving some thought to devoting the month of January to do dome exploration of my own. As New Year approached another friend posted this quote by writer Neil Gaiman:
I contemplated the realities my artist friend has encountered, and knew that, like him, I would also be met with disappointments when I open the kiln. There would likely be stuff that would never ever be seen by anyone other than myself. On the other hand, just maybe, I might surprise myself and see something that I really like. I decided to go for it.
As Portland gets its first snowfall, and all is slippery and cold outside, I’m doing to be hunkered down in the studio, enjoying the warmth of a working kiln. And just maybe there will be some surprises to show at the Oregon Glass Guild Show this coming April 22-24, 2016.
